On March 21, the first day of spring, the award-winning independent filmmaker Jay Craven, in collaboration with Marlboro College, will begin shooting NORTHERN BORDERS, based on my 1994 novel of the same name.
All I can say is WAHOO! NORTHERN BORDERS is my personal favorite of my stories set in "Kingdom County." Along with A STRANGER IN THE KINGDOM, it's probably the most autobiographical of my novels. It tells the story of young Austen Kittredge, who grows up on his grandparents' farm in northern Vermont in the 1940s and '50s. The farm in Lost Nation Hollow – complete with its own live elephant, a great snowy owl, and a "Green Mountain whale" – becomes a magical place for Austen. Best of all are his incomparably eccentric grandparents, Austen Kittredge I and his wife, Abiah, whose marriage is known as the Forty Years War.
Austen Sr. and Abiah aren't really based on my grandparents, but my grandfather and grandmother, and their huge extended family, certainly inspired the characters in NORTHERN BORDERS. I know that I felt about Gram and Gramp, and the incredible experience of growing up with them, the way Austen feels about his grandparents and their end-of-an-era hill farm.
NORTHERN BORDERS was previously in development by Academy Award-winning producer Jake Eberts (Ghandi, The Killing Fields, A River Runs Through It) for actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. I really can't express how delighted I am that my long-time Northeast Kingdom friend and colleague Jay Craven has picked up the project. I love Jay's earlier feature films of my novels DISAPPEARANCES, WHERE THE RIVERS FLOW NORTH, and A STRANGER IN THE KINGDOM, as well as his first dramatic film of a Mosher story, HIGH WATER. He always comes up with a great screen play, a superb cast and crew, and exactly the right personal vision to transform my fiction to the big screen.
Please watch my FaceBook page, blog, and Twitter, and Jay's website, http://kingdomcounty.org, for updates about the filming and subsequent theatrical release of NORTHERN BORDERS.
