Points North, the critically acclaimed final work of fiction by Howard Frank Mosher, published by Saint Martin’s Press, will be available in stores as of January 23, with a series of book launch events scheduled to begin that day (listed on the Events page here). These last, connected stories from Kingdom County, Vermont are available for pre-order from your favorite bookstore.
In this book, which Publishers Weekly calls “art from both history and the quotidian,” the story of the Kinneson family, often the focus of Mosher’s four-decade-long career, is brought up to the 21st Century. Through a series of stories rooted in Northern Vermont, Points North captures the essence of rural America and a way of life fast disappearing all across the country while celebrating an indomitable human spirit and the magical powers of love. |
True to his unique style, Mosher leaves us with lyrical prose from a man who missed nothing in nature, and was unafraid to confront the more challenging questions of what it means to be human. Points North is both humorous and heartbreaking, and, without a wasted word, immerses the reader in Kingdom County, a sliver of America where cold waters harbor brook trout, small communities fight tooth and nail to maintain their signature individualism, and explorations of family history sometimes lead to unsettling revelations.
Writing in long-hand from the kitchen table of his Vermont home, Mosher finished Points North shortly after his cancer diagnosis at the end of 2016, learning of its acceptance for publication before he passed away, nearly a year to the day ahead of its release. He believed it to be his best work, a fitting culmination to a career spent championing the eccentric, acknowledging that the ugly – jealously and racism – are as rooted in us as the beautiful, and always believing that the story is what’s most important.
